Projected leave or termination date
Has employment been continuous with one employer?
An entitlement to Long Service Leave only arises where service is continuous.
Continuous service can be affected by any of the factors listed below.
- Purchase, sale or liquidation of the business
- Transfer of assets between companies
- Casual or seasonal employment
- Service with related companies
- Period of long term sick leave or workers compensation
- Unpaid parental leave
- Other unpaid leave
- Previous resignations
- Labour hire and contracting
- Apprenticeships and traineeships
- Service outside South Australia
- Stand downs
- Terminations and reinstatements

Has any unpaid leave been taken?

Q. Are part-time and casual employees entitled to long service leave?
A. Yes, part-time and casual employees accrue long service leave just like full-time employees. However, the payment for a period of leave is based on the ordinary hours worked per week, or the average weekly hours over the previous three years of service.

Q. How is long service leave calculated for workers that earn commission?
A. The calculation for the amount of leave doesn't differ, however the payment for a period of leave is based on the average earnings over the previous 12 months of service.
Q. What is continuous service?
A. An entitlement to long service leave only arises where service is continuous.
Any period of annual leave, long service leave, sick leave (whether paid or unpaid) and workers compensation will count as service, and will not break the continuity of service.
Q. Does unpaid leave affect my long service leave entitlement?
A. Yes, long service leave does not accrue during periods of unpaid parental leave and other unpaid leave granted by the employer, i.e. it does not count as service but it won't break the continuity of service.
